Friends, Classmates or Parasites?

You may have already studied what a parasite is. They are organisms, like mites and fleas, that live in or on other organisms. They are bloodsucking little creatures.

We call some of our friends and classmates parasites or suckers if they depend so much on us for their needs.

There are some classmates who do not prepare and provide what they need in class. They just walk ask for papers, borrow a pen, copy your assignment, copy your notes or worse, get you answer during exams.

It has become a compulsion for them to ask and borrow. Could it be that they have been conditioned by the very people from whom they borrow or ask? They sort of got used to that bad habit of depending on others. It has already become a routine for them.

Pampering classmates and friends with what they need reduce them to a level of parasites. They are dehumanized, in a sense, because they become dependent on others.

However, for those who give or lend things, they would find it difficult to refuse or say, “NO.” The irony of it is that, when you refuse a friend, he/she gets angry with you. One has to be firm or tactful in refusing.

Here are some ways to correct an over-dependent friend:
1. Give in the first occasion.
2. If it happens again, give but warn him/her.
3. If it does happen again, just say “No, because I love you.”
4. Tip. Write your name on all sheets of paper to discourage borrowers.=)

It is a matter of being responsible and independent not to let others abuse your generosity. Jesus would have granted all our prayers but He had to say “NO” to some because He knows that our requests will do us harm than good. Remember, no prayer is left unanswered.

Let us be independent and responsible. They are the ways of being mature.
