Greener Way of Cooking

Going green or living an environment-friendly lifestyle is the newest trend for people who strive to preserve Mother Earth from harmful chemicals and toxins. A number of green alternatives have been introduced in various industries like health, beauty, motoring and even fashion, all in the name of saving nature.

The heightened awareness of an eco-friendly lifestyle has now reached the confines of our humble kitchens. Nowadays, being environment-conscious doesn’t stop with having an organic diet, it also includes the way we cook and prepare our dishes.

Green cooking is a means of cooking and preparing dishes in a greener way. In the process, people learn means of cutting down on energy consumption, thus saving money on energy bills, and reducing the amount of carbon in their surroundings.

Here are a few green cooking tips that you can employ in your everyday cooking routine:

Reduce the amount of energy required in whipping up your favorite meals by making sure the pans have lids that fit.

When baking, turn the oven off a few minutes before the end of cooking time without opening the oven door. This way, the heat contained within the oven will be enough to continue cooking the food.

Microwave ovens are not only excellent for making popcorns, it is also energy efficient as they cook food rather quickly. However, don’t leave the microwave turned on when not in use. The clock and light settings are huge on energy consumption.

Slow cookers or crock pots are good alternatives for cooking. Although it takes longer to cook the food, it uses less heat, thus reducing energy use.

If you don’t have the patience for slow cookers, try using pressure cookers instead. Pressure cookers can cook food a quarter to a third quicker than normal cooking time. Once the right amount of pressure is reached, the heat can be turned down low, reducing energy consumption by 70%.

When cooking more than one type of vegetable, you could stack steamers (the ones with holes at the bottom) to steam one variety over another. By doing this, you are only heating one stove and not using additional water.

These green cooking tips are easy to incorporate into any family’s everyday cooking routine.
