Simple Household Repairs

No matter how durable its materials may be, a house will soon show signs of wear and tear if not maintained properly.

The first requirement to maintain a house is to clean it regularly – wax the floors, clean the bathrooms, wash the windows, remove spider webs. The roof should be painted with anti-rust coating once every five years. Clear the gutters of leaves and other items that may clog the drain during the rainy season. Dirt left on the roof and gutters also induces rusting. Cabinets, ceilings, and door jambs should be checked annually for termites. Check hinges and locks for loose screws.

Clogged kitchen drains usually result from washing oily dishes, pots and pans. The oils stick to sides of the pipes, thus clogging them. It is best to wipe awa
y the oil from the dishes, pots and pans with paper napkins (preferably used ones, a sheet of newspaper or a banana peel before washing them.

Sinks in the bathrooms are also often clogged by strands of hair, clips, tissue paper and other small items. These items should be thrown into the waste can rather than be allowed to go down the drain with the water.

The load and capacity of electrical connections should be checked regularly, especially when there is an increase in the electrical appliances being used. These should be checked if used according to their designed purpose. Rats may have nibbled on the electrical wires. Exposed wires can be very dangerous.

Use the furniture according to their designed purpose. Chairs should be sat on, and not used as ladders to reach light bulbs. Do not sit on tables or use beds as trampolines.
