Internet Safety Tips for Kids

"Look both ways before crossing the street." We all know this rule by heart since we were little kids. It was meant to protect us, so we can safely walk on our own.

Just like crossing the street, we must follow some simple rules when surfing the Internet. These rules are meant to protect us, even while we are having fun.

Whether we are surfing the Net at home, at school or at an Internet Cafe, be sure to remember the following rules:
  • Avoid sites that ask for personal information. Never give out your real last name, address, phone number or password. If you want to surf a site that asks for all these information, ask your parents first.
  • Beware of people you have never met. Just because you've exchanged e-mails with someone or talked with them in a chat room does not mean that you know this person.
  • Don't meet someone you have met online without first getting permission from your parents. If your parents give you permission, you should go with an adult and meet in public place.
  • Don't send people pictures of yourself unless you have permission from your parents.
