With the proliferation of fast food outlets all over the country, it is not surprising that the diet of some is composed of fried foods like chicken, burgers, fries and hotdogs. Some even prefer to eat in fast food outlets than at home. The youth favor these so much. With the competition presented by fast food outlets, it is important that meals at home are not only nutritious but also attractive. Here are some factors to consider when planning meals.
- People, children especially, will eat what they like and what they know cooked in the way they are familiar with.
- Vary the colors of the food on the table. Preferred colors are the bright ones like yellow, orange, pink, bright green, brown, white and red orange. Use purple, yellow green, olive and mustard sparingly.
- Introduce all tastes. Go easy on the spices like bland food; they go for the malinamnam. Go easy on the spices especially when preparing food for children. Introduce the bitter food (ampalaya) gradually. Serve fruits for dessert.
- Avoid serving the same food or preparing food the same way over short periods of time. For example, serving fried food every day of the week can be boring for the family members.
- Introduce various food textures. Vegetables can be stir-fried to retain their crunchiness; meat can be boiled to make them very soft; and soups can be made creamy.
