Braving the Bullies: Handling Harassment in the Workplace

Document. – Every time you have an encounter with the bully, write it down. List down all the offenses that the person has committed against you, including the date, the exact time and the place where the things happened.

Calm down before complaining.
– It is advisable to address your concerns to the HR department not immediately after an incident. If you file a complaint at the height of your emotions, you may sound like you are whining. So, make sure that you have already calmed down so that your complaint is more credible.

Let your job help you.
– Make sure that you show your employer that your job is affected by the bullying. Show your employer also how effective and efficient you are at work and that you are open-mined and you don’t have any difficulty getting along with your office mates. It is the right time for you to state how valuable you are as an employee.

Tell offenders about their offenses straight to their faces.
– If the bully asks you to do something that you shouldn’t be doing, tell him/her straight to his/her face, “This is not my job.” This will only show your harasser that you are not going to put up with it anymore and you are up for the battle if he/she doesn’t stop.
