Diaper Rash

Nappy rash/diaper rash, is a red, irritating skin rash in the nappy area caused by urine and feces sitting close to the skin for extended periods of time. Almost all children will have at least one episode of nappy rash. Some parents report that their children’s nappy rash is worse when they are teething, if either disposable nappies/cloth nappies are used, or if certain types of soaps or detergents are used to wash nappies. Here’s how to treat diaper rash:
  • Keep the nappy area as clean and dry as much as possible. Changing nappies frequently is advisable.
  • If using cloth nappies, rinse out all traces of soaking agent, detergent or soap completely during the washing.
  • Put nappies on the washing line rather than in the dryer whenever possible. Sunshine and fresh air are great germ killers.
  • At each nappy change, wash the buttocks and surrounding area with warm water and soft cloth. Carefully pat the bottom dry and apply barrier cream, such as lanolin or zinc and castor oil cream.
  • Leave the nappies off for as long as is practical, and expose the buttocks to air and sunlight.
  • Apply cream or ointment prescribed or suggested by your doctor, nurse/pharmacist. It is important to use one that does not burn/aggravate skin, like zinc and castor oil cream. Then place clean gauze or soft nappy liner over the affected area before putting the nappy on again.
  • Do not wash the affected area with soap too often. Weekly is enough. Do not use talcum powder or plastic pants.
  • If the rash does not seem to improve after four days, or spreads beyond the buttocks, it is important to see your doctor. The rash may have become infected and need an antiobiotic cream.
