Back labor refers to contractions felt mostly or entirely in your lower back. It often means baby's head is in a posterior position - facing your front. When baby is in posterior, the hard back of his head presses against your spine with each contraction ,causing back pain. Back labors are often longer because before baby can be born, he must turn to face the opposite direction.
Here are some suggestions to help ease back pain in labor:
- Have your partner press against or massage your lower back with his fist, the heel of his hand, or something hard (such as tennis ball).
- During contractions, do a double-hip squeeze: Your partner stands behind you while you lean forward. He places a hand on the middle of each buttocks and presses down and in, towards the middle of your spine.
- Put a hot-water bottle or hot compress on your back, or take a hot shower. Every 30 minutes switch to an ice pack and then back to heat.
