Pamper yourself in early labor. It could be hours before your body begins to labor in earnest. Take a warm bath/shower. Play music. Watch a movie at home. Have your spouse give you a massage. Distracting yourself with some pleasant sensory experiences can take your mind off your worry.
Slow your breathing. Exhale completely. Then, relax your abdominal muscles, inhale slowly and feel your abdomen and chest expanding. After you’ve inhales, slowly exhale and feel your abdominal muscles tighten until you feel calmer.
Meditate. It may sound a bit mystical, but give it a try. As you inhale, think of energy or light coming into your body. As you exhale, concentrate on releasing tension, picture it flowing right out of your body.
Reassure yourself. At each exhalation, try an affirmation such as “My body knows how to give birth,” “The contractions are healthy,” “I’m strong,” or “This feeling is normal and productive.”
