First Impressions

Normally, we have inquisitive and often discriminating impressions whenever and wherever we meet someone new. The most obvious things that we never let our senses miss are the new faces we meet.

Being inquisitive is one of the signs of intelligence, but being prejudiced is another thing. The former is a useful tool for learning while the latter does and causes more harm than good.

Curiosity urges us to know, seek, learn and understand more about the people around us. However, excessive and aggressive curiosity may lead us to become judgmental and conclusive of these people and end up with "labelling" them based on how we perceive them for the first time. This is called impression.

More often, impressions have to be evaluated and these may be proven wrong. This can be attributed to the fact that these are based on physical attributes and personal conceptions which are biased and partial. The truth reveals, so we say: "Akala ko" or "I thought so."

There is a pressing need to verify our impressions whether these are factual and true or not. The only way to carry this out is to experience being with the person. Time puts our impressions to the test. The more we spend time with the person in talking and working with him/her, the more sound and reliable the observations would be. By observing, we can check our impressions.

We can never hasten our relationship with people. We need to let time ripen our ties and let God bless our friendship. We let our new acquaintances prove their worth as persons in time just as they also let us grow to be a better person and friend.
