Coming out of the Shell: Networking for shy people

Start with the known. In starting to build your network, if you find having a conversation with people you don’t know daunting, search for familiar faces like your relatives, friends and schoolmates.

Your conversation with these people will serve as practice. Aside from that, they might be able to introduce you to more people who could provide you with more opportunities or you can work in the future.

Don’t be sorry
. Bear in mind that networking is about building a relationship that is based on mutual generosity, which means that you are not there just to ask for help but to help as well.

Be natural. Be authentic, be yourself. If you are really shy and humble, then don’t force yourself to be friendly. Some people find shy people endearing.

Volunteer
. It is advisable to join a professional organization. that way, you get to meet new people and subtly demonstrate what you can do.

Use your passions
. If you love to read novels or any books, attend a book fair. If you love basketball, go to Cuneta Astrodome or Araneta Coliseum and watch a game. In such gatherings or events, you might meet someone who has a job that you have been dreaming of, or a person who is connected with a company that can help your company in its new project.

Get introduced
. If you are at an event where you do not feel comfortable enough to introduce yourself to more people, ask the persons you have met to introduce you to other people he/she knows.

Be generous
. In networking, you don’t have to reciprocate with big things. Sometimes, sincere interest in a person is enough. You can also introduce the other person to some of the people you know who might be able to help him/her in the future.

Practice
. If you are afraid of being tongue-tied after an introduction, practice what you want to say prior to the gathering.
Experiment on different approaches that you can use until you find the best one.

Have no fear and take risks
. In the process of networking, you certainly will encounter people who are interested in helping you. That is normal, so don’t blame yourself; just move on. once you have overcome your fear, the next time you meet and introduce yourself to a new person, it will be a lot easier.
