Honesty is the best policy

Ivana, Batanes is known for its Honesty Café. What is unique about this coffee shop is that they don’t have waiters to accept payment/give change neither do they have barista to make your coffee.

Aside from those earlier mentioned, the shop is also known for imbibing the value of honesty among its customers. How? Everything is bought and sold on the basis of honesty.

The list of items that are sold in the café is posted on the wall together with their respective prices.
You might be wondering where or to whom will the patrons give their payment. There is a box near the list of items posted on the wall and has a sign, “Please pay here.”

Since there are no servers to attend to your needs, people help themselves with whatever they need.
If you want a cup of coffee, there is a hot water in a thermos bottle and beside it are coffee sachets and some biscuits. If you want cold drinks, just open the refrigerator and there you’ll find bottled refreshments. The shop also sells t-shirts and other souvenir items.

But there is an item which the owner personally sells. The owner sells gin only during nighttime. Why? Simple. The only crime in Batanes is drunkenness and unruly behavior under the influence of gin. =) In fact, according to the Mayor of Ivana, it’s only with this crime are their jails get used. The owner makes sure that the buyer is not a minor. The shop does not also sell cigarettes.

If only all places here in the Philippines are like Ivana, Batanes (which has zero crime rate), then Filipino people will not be going abroad because of the safe places to visit here in our country. Not only that, we will be even attracting more tourists and foreign investors.
