Be Safe at Home

Accidents don’t just happen; they have causes. Most of them can be prevented if people take proper care.

In our homes are many hazards that give rise to accidents like burns/scalds, falls, wounds caused by sharp cutting instruments, accidental positioning and electrocutions.

Here are a few tips to insure safety in the home:

  • Never take medicine in the dark. Keep poisons in the medicine cabinet separate from other medicines. Label all medicine bottles and place them in the medicine cabinet away from the reach of little children.
  • Another common cause of poisoning is bacteria which can easily contaminate food during warm weather, especially. To avoid Salmonella poisoning, cook chicken and egg products well. Once a tin container is opened, place the contents on a plate at once. Never eat the contents of a damaged tin can.
  • To prevent falls, don’t make your floors slippery although you can make them clean and shiny. When reaching for high objects, don’t stand on wobbly chairs or small pieces of furniture put one on top of another. Wet cement floors (like children’s urine on cement floors) are very slippery. Dry them at once. Pick up toys, pieces of paper, cloth scattered on the floor
  • Don’t put rags and slippery mats on top of staircases. Follow the motto, “Have a place for everything and put everything in place.”
  • Gas and electric connections should be properly checked. Make sure that all fires, electric fans, TV, etc., have been put off before leaving the house. Never use highly inflammable liquid to start a fire.
Always keep in mind –
“An ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure.”
